WASHINGTON (AP) ? The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee is calling for the United States to train and arm select elements of the Syrian opposition forces battling President Bashar Assad's regime.
Rep. Eliot Engel of New York sent a letter to House colleagues on Friday seeking support for legislation that he plans to introduce next week that would provide humanitarian and economic assistance to the opposition as well as lethal aid.
The move by Engel comes on the second anniversary of the uprising that the United Nations estimates has killed more than 70,000 Syrians. It also gives fresh impetus to the demands by some in Congress for greater U.S. involvement.
The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter.
