After Facebook, will gambling apps flood the iPhone?
New reports claim that developers could be working on multiple gaming apps that allow playing for money to be made available on the iPhone.
Facebook last week launched an app which users could use to gamble with real money.
The gambling app Bingo & Slots Friendzy, is available in the UK and is strictly meant for those above 18.
The game, an extension of the Jackpotjoy.com and developed by Gamesys could just be first of many other similar gambling related apps that could flood the mobile and online social networking sites.
Reports are already emerging that Apple could allow similar gambling apps on its own app centre.
However with gambling being strictly banned in the UAE and most countries in the region, the apps will be banned here.
Strict regulations are already being put in place by the app centres themselves.
Facebook has ensured that the app does not work anywhere else outside the UK.
Apple too has strict regulations in place when it comes to its app centre.
Any effort to download apps not meant for this market is promptly blocked.
Those who manage to download controversial apps in other countries before the instrument is shipped into the UAE may not be able to use it either.
The UAE?s Telecom Regulatory Authority has already put in place effective measures where content that go against the social and cultural sensitivity in the country can be blacked out.
According to a recent report in Bloomberg, it may not be long before iPhone users will be gamble with real money as their mobile instruments will be converted into virtual slot machines.
?Big Fish Games Inc. is introducing a version of its gambling application Big Fish Casino with real-money betting in the UK, where it is legal, the Seattle-based company said.
?It will arrive in Apple Inc. (AAPL)?s App Store in the coming weeks, and Betable Ltd., a London-based partner of Big Fish, will process bets in the program,? the report said.
The financial potential is immense as developers are looking at figures of over $100 billion in the next few years.
The report quoting Juniper Research states that these mobile casinos will earn game developers about $100 billion by 2017 compared to $20 billion in 2011.
Facebook and Apple are clearly aware of the potential and do not want to miss out on the opportunity to introduce it wherever it is legal.?
?Facebook is a place that allows people to connect and share,? a Facebook spokesperson has been quoted as saying. ?Real money gaming is a popular and well-regulated activity in the UK and we are allowing a partner to offer their games to adult users on the Facebook platform in a safe and controlled manner.?
Moreover, as long as the payment mechanism is linked to cards issued by banks within the UAE, the transaction may never materialise.
