BEAUFORT, N.C. -- A Beaufort fudge shop is partnering with the USO to ship sweet treats to troops overseas.

The program, called Sweets 4 Soldiers, will send fudge to service members who are deployed or just recently came home.

The Fudge Factory is a staple on the downtown Beaufort waterfront, and store owner Steve Waters has been cooking up top-notch fudge for 20 years.

"So my kids worked for a candy maker one time one summer and they kept saying 'Dad why don't you make fudge?' So finally they convinced me I should try it, and so I'm still at it," said Waters.

Waters said he loves fudge so much, he decided to start shipping it for free to troops overseas. He launched a program called Sweets 4 Soldiers and not surprisingly, it became a big hit.

"We started getting requests for donations of fudge for units," Water said. "And we sent most fudge out but it kind of got to be expensive."

That's why the factory is partnering with the USO to send the sweet treat to deployed service members.

"It gives them a connection to being back at home," Water said. "Especially if they came from Cherry Point, they know where the fudge factory is."

Amy Robles, a Fudge Factory employee, said it gives them a "piece of home."

"It gives them something to think about, saying 'Hey people over here are still thinking about us, let's do what we have to do and come back home and be appreciated,'" Robles said.

Shop regulars agree the fudge is delicious, and to keep it shipping to our deployed troops, the factory is asking for donations to the program.

"We just thought that there might be other people out there that would want to make a donation and help us send some fudge," Waters said. "And I hope we have another box or two to send overseas pretty soon."
