Downey Calvary Chapel High football team had a dream experience this year, but its storybook season eventually came to an end Friday.
Jack Baldwin scored four touchdowns and J.J. Ntshaykolo ran for 106 yards and a touchdown as Thacher ended the Grizzlies' season by beating them 52-13 in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I 8-Man football playoffs at Downey High.
"This was a great team and we had a great season," Downey Calvary Chapel coach Tom Laidlaw said. "Last week, we beat the top-ranked team, we won 10 games, but tonight we just didn't have it."
The Grizzlies (10-2) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a Matthew Sanchez 7-yard run, but the Toads (9-1) came right back to take the lead for good after Kyrien Edwards scored from 8 yards out and made a two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead.
Thacher recovered the ensuing onside kick and moments later, Baldwin scored the first of his four scores on a 2-yard touchdown run that gave the Toads a 16-7 lead.
Downey Calvary Chapel would cut the lead to 16-13 going into halftime after Zechariah Laidlaw caught a 14-yard pass from Nathan Jewell with 46 seconds left. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, that would be their last highlight of the night.
On the first play of the second half, Ntshaykolo broke free for a 60-yard run to make it 22-13. Baldwin scored again
on Thacher's next possession, this time from 3 yards out and it was suddenly 28-13.The Toads would go on to score three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
"I think we lost the battle of attrition," Tom Laidlaw said. "We had a lot of guys going both ways tonight and I think it finally caught up with us."
