New findings by American Diabetes Association point to rising costs of diabetes treatment; those with diabetes seeking SSDI should work closely with physicians to document disease impact, according to Allsup.
American Diabetes Association (ADA) researchers reported earlier this month that the 2012 costs of diagnosed diabetes reached $245 billion, about 41 percent higher than $174 billion in 2007. Individuals with diabetes have a higher risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke, and the additional complications and costs illustrate the need to document all health-related issues with their doctors, according to Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) representation, veterans disability appeal and Medicare plan selection services.
The study ties the rising costs of the disease to its growing prevalence. Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S, according to the ADA. Nearly 26 million adults and children are living with the disease and its many health-related complications. In addition, the condition of prediabetes affects 79 million people. Those with prediabetes are at an increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.
?Anyone with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes mellitus is at risk for a number of cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure,? said Ed Swierczek, Allsup senior claimant representative. ?Cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of diabetes-related morbidity and mortality.?
In addition, the study reported $69 billion of indirect costs to the economy from lost productivity, absenteeism and unemployment because of disability as well as early mortality. Social Security Disability Insurance, which is a federally mandated insurance program, can be important for people who can no longer work because of the severity of their disease.
?The incidence of diabetes mellitus increases with age,? Swierczek explained. ?With an aging population of baby boomers, more and more individuals are developing diabetes mellitus and suffering the consequences of the disease along with cardiovascular-related ailments.?
SSDI provides monthly benefits to people under full retirement age (age 65 or older) who can no longer work because of a severe disability that is expected to last 12 months or more, or is terminal. Individuals pay for this federal insurance program through their FICA taxes.
Swierczek pointed out that weight also plays a significant factor in diabetes. ?Obesity has become a significant health factor in many individuals? lives, thereby increasing the probability of developing diabetes mellitus along with cardiovascular complications that result,? Swierczek added.
