HBT: Varitek retiring after 15-year career

This is not surprising at all given all of the rumblings we?ve heard, but it?s going to be official as of Thursday: Jason Varitek is retiring. ?He told the Boston Globe that he will announce it formally in Fort Myers that day.

The end was certainly nigh. ?Varitek turns 40 in April. He hit .221/.300/.423 with 11 home runs, 36 RBI and a .723 OPS over 68 games last season, with basically negative defensive value. ?For his career, however, he hit .256/.341/.435 with 193 home runs and 757 RBI. ?He was a three time All-Star. ?He won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger award in 2005. ?He got a couple of MVP votes along the way.

But more significant is the leadership role he played with the Red Sox teams that will always be remembered for breaking the 86 year-long World Series drought. And because of that his stature in the team?s history will always be greater than even his considerable stature the pure baseball merits might otherwise warrant.

Happy trails, Mr. Varitek. ?Baseball was better for you being a part of it.

BARC Slammed By Animal Intake, Slashing Prices To Re-Home Pets

(credit: Matt Cardy/Getty Images)

(credit: Matt Cardy/Getty Images)

BARC, the City of Houston?s animal shelter, is fighting a capacity crisis. BARC is required by law to accept every animal brought to its doors by Houston residents, and also has the mandate to provide animal control services within Houston city limits. Animal activity such as roaming to breed tends to decrease during colder weather; unfortunately, the unseasonably warm temperatures this ?winter? has brought many more animals than normal across BARC?s doorstep. BARC took in 250 animals from Tuesday, February 21st to Thursday, February 23rd. The BARC facility has 550 animal enclosures for both dogs and cats. As of Friday morning, February 24th, there were 476 dogs alone at the shelter, in addition to 121 cats. In response to the intake spike, BARC is slashing its adoption fee to $10 for cats and $20 for dogs into next week, hoping that Houstonians will relieve the strain.

?People are more apt to dump unwanted pets outside when it`s warm if they can`t take care of it or don`t want it anymore because they think the animal will be able to talk care of itself,? said Carlene Lormand, Marketing & Outreach Manager for BARC. Adding, ?Houston winters normally allow us to regroup and prepare for kitten season in the spring, and ?everything? season after that. This winter has been great to get outdoors with your family, but it is stressing our capacity. We just flat out need help right now. We have great pets here, you already get the most bang for your ?new pet? buck at BARC, but we have to do what we can to get people here to move more animals out the door and into homes.?

High intakes have exhausted BARC?s capability to provide additional space. Litter upon litter of puppies and multitudes of stray dogs are flooding the BARC facility while many area rescue groups are already full. BARC has also seen a higher number of lost pets or animals arriving at the facility that may have owners looking for them. Remember to check BARC if your pet is lost, no matter where you are located in the City. To check online, visit www.petharbor.com to search for your lost pet ? BARC information is updated on this site every hour.

All animals offered for adoption are spayed/neutered and have received age-appropriate vaccinations, a City license tag and microchip. For the weekend, BARC has partnered with several Petsmart and Petco locations around the city to offer adoptions of fully vetted BARC animals, including Saturday at Petsmart at 290 and Hollister (11a ? 6p), Petco on Eldridge at 1960 (Noon ? 6p), Petco on Highway 6 in Copperfield (11a ? 6p), and Petco on Wilcrest and Westheimer (Noon ? 5p). On Sunday the Petco Wilcrest and Westheimer location will be offering adoptable pets from 1p ? 6p.

?barc ad BARC Slammed By Animal Intake, Slashing Prices To Re Home Pets

BARC knows Houston can respond during this unusual influx. Remember, year-round BARC offers a free ?Seniors for Seniors? placement program for pets over 3 years old for Seniors 55 and older. To get in the spirit of the Academy Awards, BARC is filming a promotional video Saturday they plan to air in the coming weeks ahead. Visit BARC on Saturday, and you just might see yourself on camera!

And, as always, the BARC facility will host Friends of BARC?s Wags to Whiskers adoption event at 3200 Carr on Saturday 12-4 pm with free hot dogs and hamburgers. The tireless Friends of BARC volunteers welcome all potential adopters, fosters and volunteers with their energy and clear dedication to BARC animals.

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help the BARC Houston shelter, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.

Craft room tour with Marty's Musings | Craftaholics Anonymous?

Marty from Marty?s Musings is here to show off her Craft Room makeover and share some organization tips. enjoy! -Linda

Linda at Craftaholics Anonymous (love that title!) asked me to share my scrapbook room makeover and any helpful organizational tips I gleaned from the process. My original post is here?but since I?ve worked in this room for six months now I?ll also share some of the things that worked and didn?t work for me.

The transformation was done over the course of a few weeks. This is the room my oldest son had been sleeping in for a year or so. (He has since moved to college. ~sigh~) Many of his clothes and things, though, were still in his brother?s room. You can tell from the before pictures that my stuff and his life were all crammed in together! I didn?t scrapbook in here because there was no available space. I had all my ?stuff? but nowhere to work! The room contained a full bed which was entirely too big for the room. The space is 10? x 12?, fairly small for a bedroom, but we live in an older house and that?s as good as it gets!

I spent weeks devouring websites and magazines trying to plan out my space. I was possessed with this project, probably more than any other one in our 21 years in this house. My husband and I enjoyed countless hours talking through my options and ways to keep the remodel as cheap as possible. We actually transformed the room in stages, moving out the full bed, chest and bookcase and replacing them with a twin bed. This immediately gave us a tremendous freedom in space! My husband also painted in stages as we repositioned things around the room. I also cleaned out my supplies BEFORE we started moving things around and sold the extras on Craigslist. (First mistake, not selling my supplies for more money. The lady who bought my extras got a great deal!)

?BEFORE

AFTER

?And voila! Here?s the most important wall in the room. (You can click on each picture for a closer examination).?If you look carefully in the ?after? pictures you will see many items reused and recycled in my new and improved room.

?This picture highlights the same wall with some of my goodies, prices and where I obtained them. Many, many of my storage solutions came from yard sales.

?You will notice that my counter is waist high. I scrap and create standing up and there was much consternation over the exact height of the counter. Luckily, we figured right and it is perfect! I bought this desk chair at a yard sale and it was a great buy and the most comfortable chair. (My cats like it, too!)

The biggest splurge was the flat screen TV. The screen doubles as a computer monitor. Without this we couldn?t figure out a place to put the old TV without losing a ton of space. This was a great purchase. I also splurged on an Ott-lite because I had heard wonderful things about them. Half price at Jo-Ann?s. ?The countertop was discounted at Home Depot and I adore it! Blends in with the room without showing lots of dust and ?mistakes!?

I used many glass jars (mixed and matched) for storage of small embellishments, buttons, brads, etc. I think these were from a spice rack I found at a yard sale.

Love my label maker for tags!

I have had these black drawers for several years and love them for organizing so many different things including patterned and solid paper scraps (separated into small and large), misc. tools, even a drawer of nail polish! Can I just say I?m in love with my label maker? I destroyed the one I started with so I bought another one just like it.

Brads and eyelets

Stamp pads

?This is one of my favorite storage solutions! I adore ribbon and have far too many rolls that I have gotten at yard sales and craft stores. I wanted to be able to see as much of it as possible because it inspires me and I use it often on cards and layouts. ?My husband rigged the dowel rods and hooks. A perfect solution plus it?s pretty to look at!

?I use a Making Memories Desktop Carousel?for all my crucial items. When I go to a crop I just take it with me like it is! It includes my adhesives, glues, notepads, corner rounder, etc.

I have a stool here in case I want to scrap or work sitting down. One of my top goals for this room was keeping my Cricut out to use whenever I wanted. Score! This little table was in our living room and I repurposed it for my room. Perfect!

My husband is a painting contractor and often brings home things others are getting rid of. He was given this rolling craft table that stores underneath my counter but also opens to give me a tremendous amount of space if I want to invite a friend over or need extra room. Free!

My husband built this wooden shelving unit for paper but I now use it for idea books stored in the closet. I used two of the tackle boxes for alphabet letters and misc. small embellishments. It?s not the most immaculate closet but I can get to everything!

Most important storage: my secret stash of chocolate (the little green box)! Every crafter needs one of these!

I use these hardware organizers for storage of individual letters and other misc. embellishments.

?My scrapbook room?s design ended up revolving around the two units I bought at Goodwill for $20 total (below). ?The unit had 6?x6? cubbies with removable partitions. I removed several of them to allow the units to be used for 12?12 paper. Absolutely perfect solution for my massive collection! (I am slightly paper crazy.) This also allowed smaller compartments at the top for some of my other supplies.

We bought the twin bed with headboard from my niece and used a mattress and bedding we already owned. Best feature: more drawers for my ribbon stash! It seriously was taking over the world!

I wanted a place to display recent layouts and this was our solution. I love the inspiration and feeling of accomplishment it gives me.

This wall was a work in process. I got the black shelf at a yard sale for $3 and used pictures I already had for the inserts. I used half off coupons and bought two 12?12 frames at Michael?s and found a couple more at a yard sale. I then used free collage prints that I had gotten at Walgreen?s, matted them and used the Cricut for the date. I love this wall and it only cost about $15!

One of the keys to my scrapbook ?organizational system? was gleaned from this book: Photo Freedom by Stacy Julian. If you follow the link it will take you to Amazon, with the new book price showing right at $100. No, I didn?t pay that price. It was more like $20. I?m guessing if you search you can find it cheaper (please, let?s hope so.) The basic idea is a filing system for photos that either puts your photos into categories or in chronological order. ?For those pictures I?m fairly certain I will scrapbook by event, I put them into two 12?12 3-ring binders in pocket pages. I have 10 years of pictures (not scrapbooked) in these two binders.

After I scrap my pics onto a layout there are always leftover pics. These go into one of four storage boxes, sorted by category. My categories are All About Us, People We Love, Places We Go, and Things We Do (each represented in a different color binder). ?Within these categories are subcategories such as one for each individual child, our extended family, church, vacation, holidays, etc.

I don?t worry about scrapping chronologically. I never really have. This system of Stacy Julian?s set me free! If I want to scrap an event I go to my binders located in my scraproom and look for the pics chronologically. But if I want to scrap a connection through the years (such as the layout displayed above of my daughter and her dad) I go straight to my storage boxes and the pics are right there! No searching through backup CD?s and boxes for pics of the two of them together.

If you can?t tell I adore this system. It works for me! The other part of my preserving our memories comes with relocating my favorite scrapbooks to a bookcase directly by the front door. If there were to be a fire they would be easily grabbed on the way out! Other than family and pets there is nothing more important to me than these albums. They contain our family history and memories.

Category storage boxes

Albums located by the front door

?These are not all of my albums but they are the ones I cherish most. They also include my Project Life?albums from the last three years (and that, my friends, is a post for another day!)

About $500!

Lessons learned from my remodel:

**time spent researching and dreaming and planning are not spent in vain!

**use your space wisely and evaluate where to put your most used items

**decide whether you want open or closed storage (I used both)

**if you want to do things as inexpensively as possible you have to be prepared to take your time and collect storage items over a period of time

**the room is always a work in progress

Cupertino Property Management Firm Says Low Vacancy Rates ...

CUPERTINO, Calif. ? Cupertino property manager Jerry Garrity of First Statewide Realty sees continued low vacancy rates in the Silicon Valley boosting investor demand in the region?s real estate market.

Garrity, whose?Cupertino property management?firm has helped real estate investors? portfolios survive and grow through three decades and five recessions, says the rental market is expected to stay strong through 2012, because there are still more backlogged foreclosures coming on the market from banks.

?Now that the big banks have made a deal with the Justice Department on how to resolve backlogged foreclosures, there will be more owners forced into the?Cupertino rentals?market.?

As a result, Garrity says investors have been taking up the slack by purchasing bank owned properties at low prices in a record-low interest rate environment.

?This is a market where I look around and see opportunities. The savvy investor who understands the value of having a professionally managed real estate portfolio can really grow their wealth during times like this.?

He says the mistake most inexperienced investors make is thinking they can save money by self-managing their rental property.

?Property management services actually protect the investment, and over time, can increase its total cash flow, because we are experts in efficiency. From screening renters to maintaining the property, we take seriously our job of helping our clients maintain positive cash flow through the lifetime of their investment, even during recessions.?

Deal done: Europe seals new $170B Greece bailout

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, talking to Greece's Prime Minister Lucas Papademos on Monday, admitted after the Greek bailout deal was unveiled that "it's not an easy (program), it's an ambitious one."

By NBC News, msnbc.com and news services

Updated at 5 a.m. ET: BRUSSELS -- After months of tough negotiating, Europe and the International Monetary Fund sealed a deal early Tuesday to hand Greece ?130 billion ($170 billion) in additional bailout loans to save it from a default that threatened the viability of the euro, undermining global economic confidence.

The early-hours agreement to avert default comes after negotiators persuaded private bondholders to take greater losses and Athens to commit to very severe austerity measures.

Ministers finalized measures to cut Greece's debt to 120.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, a fraction above the target, to secure its second rescue in less than two years and meet a bond repayment next month.

The eurozone and the IMF, which will be providing the money for the new bailout, hope the new program will eventually put Greece back into a position where it can survive without external support and secure its place in the euro currency union. Finance ministers from Greece and the other 16 euro countries meeting in Brussels wrangled until the early morning hours over how that could be achieved.

What does the Greece bond swap bailout deal mean?

On top of the new rescue loans, Athens will also ask banks and other investment funds to forgive it some ?107 billion in debt, while the European Central Bank and other national central banks in the eurozone will forgo profits on their holdings.

The accord, which had been months in the making, seeks to reduce Greece's massive debts on all fronts, with both private and official creditors going beyond what they had said was possible in the past.

But the costs for Greece, in potential loss of autonomy and further strict austerity measures, were implicit from a statement from Eurogroup, which Europe's finance ministers belong to.

A Greek economist talks about a bailout's potential pitfalls before the final agreement is unveiled. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

"The Eurogroup is fully aware of the significant efforts already made by the Greek citizens but also underlines that further major efforts by the Greek society are needed to return the economy to a sustainable growth path," the statement read. "We reiterate our commitment to provide adequate support to Greece during the life of the programme and beyond until it has regained market access, provided that Greece fully complies with the requirements and objectives of the adjustment programme."

So it was clear that Greece, which kicked off Europe's debt crisis two years ago, was at the very best starting a long and painful road to recovery. At the worst, the new program would push the country even deeper into recession and see it default on its debts further down the line.

"It's not an easy (program), it's an ambitious one," said Christine Lagarde, the head of the IMF, adding that there were significant risks that Greece's economy could not grow as much as its international creditors were hoping.

The austerity measures wrought from Greece are also widely unpopular among the population and may hold difficulties for a country which is due to hold an election in April. Further protests could test politicians' commitment to cuts to wages, pensions and jobs.

So social upheaval was a real risk, Paschos Mandravelis, a political analyst at Greece's Kathimerini newspaper, told NBC News' Andy Eckardt.

"If people in the broad middle class landscape get desperate and feel choked, there is the possibility of some kind of uprising," he said.

"We don't have money...Now our only target is to have food to survive," Greek shopkeeper Michael Ipermahos says about the gravity of the financial crisis. "My advice to my children is to leave Greece, throw away their Greek passports and be a citizen of another country."

A Greek's only hot seller: Tear gas masks

And some economists say there are still questions over whether Greece can pay off even a reduced debt burden.

A return to economic growth could take as much as a decade, a prospect that brought thousands of Greeks onto the streets to protest against austerity measures Sunday. The cuts will deepen its five-year recession, hurting government revenues.

Europe's economy edges closer to recession

A report prepared by experts from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund said Greece would need extra relief to cut its debts near to the official debt target given the worsening state of its economy.

If Athens did not follow through on economic reforms and savings to make its economy more competitive, its debt could hit 160 percent by 2020, said the report, obtained by Reuters.

"Given the risks, the Greek program may thus remain accident-prone, with questions about sustainability hanging over it," the nine-page confidential report said.

The 'DNA robots' that hunt cancer cells - The Week

Instant Guide

posted on February 21, 2012, at 12:20 PM

Harvard scientists have made complex bio-machines out of "DNA origami" that could help target cancer cells. Photo: Shawn Douglas SEE ALL 30 PHOTOS

In a concept that sounds eerily similar to science fiction, researchers from Harvard University have created tiny nano-sized "DNA robots" that can be instructed to hunt and destroy cancer cells. Scientists created the bio-machines to carry out the duties normally reserved for immune-system-boosting white blood cells, and the mini-robots could potentially lead to treatments for other autoimmune diseases. Here, a brief look at this "exciting" new experimental form of therapy:

How do these robots kill cancer?
The tiny devices were constructed out of DNA strands and folded into a shape resembling a clamshell. Researchers call it the "DNA origami" method. The devices are pre-programmed to open up in the presence of cancerous cells. Once open, the robot releases a series of antibodies that cause its target to self-destruct. "The idea is based on the behavior of the body's immune cells," says Elizabeth Lopatto at Bloomberg Businessweek, "which recognize viruses or other invaders and attack them." (Watch a demonstration below.)

And this really worked?
In preliminary lab-controlled tests, a team of Harvard scientists, led by Shawn Douglas, used the DNA robots to identify and effectively kill leukemia and lymphoma cells in a petri dish. "In diseases such as cancer, we know if we can find every single last cell and kill or reprogram it, we can cure disease," said Douglas.

What's next for the cancer-killing bots?
Researchers will test the robots in animals like mice. Introducing the robots into living bodies will present a new set of challenges, says The State Column, including figuring out how to minimize the robot's toxicity levels, and increasing the amount of time the robots can circulate in the blood stream, particularly because the DNA robots can't reproduce on their own. Commercial use of the robots is still years away.

Pets: The best way to Acquire Treatment of your Pet dog

by: stephengrey - February 20th, 2012??

The Bond that could come among a person plus a dog is usually incredibly strong, particularly if that bond were strengthened residing with each other for many years, I?ve personally cried immediately after loosing our relatives pet dog that had been just like a ideal buddy to me from my birth until I as fifteen a long time aged, when he was strike by an automobile one morning hours.

Pet dogs serve many diverse requires for dog snuggie men and women. A lot of people have a pet dog simply because they are lonely and have to have a faithful buddy or simply because they desire a puppy to protect the house. A canine that may be taken excellent treatment of and presented attention to consistently will give his lifestyle to help shield his house and his operator. For your blind a dog is usually a pair of eyes that can help them get all-around and for your police a canine could be a very important tool and a faithful lover, having a nose that practically nothing can beat.

The first point you have to know about caring for a pet is dogs need to have plenty of workout. This is actually the very same for huge pet dogs and modest dogs. Pope makes NY's Timothy Dolan a cardinal

Pope Benedict, putting his mark on the Catholic Church's future, on Saturday inducted 22 men ? including New York's Archbishop Timothy Dolan ? into the exclusive club of cardinals who will one day elect one of their own to succeed him.

Dolan is already being touted by some Vatican experts as a possible future candidate to become the first American pope.

Benedict, who turns 85 in April and is showing signs of his age, elevated the men to the highest Church rank below him at a ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica known as a consistory.

"Cardinals are entrusted with the service of love: love for God, love for his Church, an absolute and unconditional love for his brothers and sisters, even unto shedding their blood, if necessary (in defense of the faith)," the pope told the new cardinals before giving them their rings and red birettas, or hats.

"Furthermore, they are asked to serve the Church with love and vigor, with the transparency and wisdom of teachers, with the energy and strength of shepherds, with the fidelity and courage of martyrs," he said.

The new cardinals are from the United States, Hong Kong, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, India, Canada, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Romania, Belgium, and Malta.

Secret conclave
Eighteen of them are aged under 80 and thus will be eligible to enter a secret conclave to elect the next pope from among their own ranks.

Twelve of those are Europeans, bringing the number of "cardinal electors" from the continent to 67 out of 125.

With the new appointments, Benedict, who was elected in a secret conclave in 2005, has now named more than half the cardinal electors. The others were named by his predecessor John Paul.

Compared to the 67 "cardinal electors" from Europe, Latin America now has 22, North America has 15, Africa has 11, Asia has 9 and Oceania has one.

Dolan: New York isn't like 'Sodom and Gomorrah'

As of Saturday, Italy alone will have 30 cardinals out of the 125 under age 80.

That boosts Italy's chances of taking back the papacy for one of its own following decades under a Polish and a German pope, or at least playing the kingmaker role if an Italian papal candidate doesn't emerge.

Only the United States comes close, with 12 cardinals under 80, including New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Cardinal-designate Edwin O'Brien, the former archbishop of Baltimore who is now grand master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher, which raises money for the church in the Holy Land.

Video: Archbishop: Sex scandal must not be forgotten (on this page)

Cardinals are the pope's closest collaborators in the Vatican and around the world. They lead major archdioceses and run key Vatican departments that help the pope decide Church policy and doctrine that can affect the lives of world's 1.3 billion Roman Catholics.

At the ceremony, the pope told the new cardinals that while they will cooperate closely with him in "the delicate task" of governing the worldwide Church, they must first and foremost be men of religion.

"May your mission in the Church and the world always be "in Christ" alone, responding to his logic and not that of the world, and may it be illumined by faith and animated by charity which comes to us from the glorious Cross of the Lord," he said.

Benedict also asked for prayers so that he can guide the Church "with a firm and humble hand".

Leaked letters allege corruption
The consistory, usually a joyful event, is taking place under a cloud because it follows a spate of leaked letters alleging corruption in the Vatican.

Numerically, at least, the pope has increased the chances that the next pontiff will be a conservative European but there have been surprises in past conclaves.

The pope is a conservative on matters of faith and sexual morals such as birth control, homosexuality and the ban on women priests. Each time he names cardinals he puts his stamp on Roman Catholicism's future by choosing men who share his views.

Besides Dolan, other prominent new cardinals are John Tong Hon, archbishop of Hong Kong, and Rainer Maria Woelki, archbishop of Berlin in the pope's native Germany.

Seven of new "cardinal electors" under the age of 80 are Italian ? six of them members of the Vatican's central administration and the other the archbishop of Florence.

Popes usually reign for life but in a book last year, Benedict said he would not hesitate to become the first pontiff to resign willingly in more than 700 years if he felt himself no longer able, "physically, psychologically and spiritually", to run the Catholic Church.

Several popes in recent history, including the late Pope John Paul, considered resigning for health reasons, but none did so.

The last pope to resign willingly was Celestine V in 1294 after reigning for only five months. Gregory XII reluctantly abdicated in 1415 to end a dispute with a rival claimant to the Holy See.

The Vatican says the pope's health is good but he needs to conserve his strength. Last October he started using a mobile platform which aides use to wheel him up the central aisle of St Peter's Basilica.

Armed robbers steal 70 relics from Greek museum

Onlookers and police gather near the museum in Olympia, Greece, following Friday's theft.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 10:16 a.m. ET: ATHENS, Greece?-- Armed thieves looted a museum on Friday in Greece's Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games, stealing bronze and pottery artefacts just weeks after the country's National Gallery was also burgled.

Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos offered to resign following the robbery.

Police said armed thieves overpowered a female security guard and stole some 70 bronze and pottery objects. The culprits reportedly used hammers to smash display cases.

"They overwhelmed and gagged the woman who guarded the building," a police official told Reuters. "The value of the objects stolen has not been estimated yet."

Sporting authorities are to hold a ceremony at the museum on May 10 to light the Olympic flame for the London Games.

In January, three works of art, including one by Pablo Picasso and another by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, were stolen from the country's National Gallery in the capital, Athens.

After the first gallery robbery, culture ministry officials said cuts to museum budgets had damaged security arrangements.

Greece has seen a rise in crime as its debt-laden economy has shrunk 16 percent in size from its 2008 peak, leading to youth unemployment of just under 50 percent.

Rioters burn 45 buildings as Greek government backs cuts

A government spokesman said Prime Minister Lucas Papademos would decide whether to accept Geroulanos' resignation once all the facts were clear.

According to the FBI, the?stolen antiquities trade is worth more than $6 billion per year.

The agency runs the National Stolen Art File, a computerized index of reported stolen art and cultural properties, for the use of law enforcement agencies across the world. It also?maintains a task force 13 special agents dedicated to investigating the trade.

How To Clean Your House Using Green And Effective Home ...

Start Your Home Improvements By Cleaning With Products That Are Green-Based You want to discover more about diploma of nursing because you have an obvious need to know ? we get it. So, the fact that you are here with a need to know more is just a normal thing to happen. But what is surprising is that every once in a while, we are drawn or compelled to something for reasons that are not always in our control. No matter what sparked your interest to see what is behind it all, you have your reasons somewhere in you. This article has an introductory treatment on the subject matter, and you can take that and expand it in just about any direction you choose. When you think about doing home improvements, the list is usually long. To improve the appearance of your home and raise its value, giving it a thorough cleaning is the best place to start. If you want to keep pumping harmful chemicals into your house, then don?t stop using those traditional cleaners you have been using. Because of that, changing to green cleaning methods, is one of the best home improvements you can make. You can increase the value of your home by using green cleaning methods, and this article will show you a few of them. Find a green-based cleanser that you might like, and choose it. A lot of green cleaning products can now be found in any store, for example Seventh Generation, which is relatively affordable. You can find that brand very inexpensively at Target. Transitioning to environmentally friendly methods for cleaning, from traditional types of cleansers, will be pretty easy when using these lines, along with others such as Biokleen or Method. Right away you can start using these products, which is a good thing. Nothing else needs to be done to make these products ready to use. After you have bought the product, whenever you are ready to clean, all you need to do is spray. Start drying your laundry when you take it out of the washer, by hanging it up. The option isn?t always there to hang dry your laundry, so during the winter months it is nice to have a dryer. In order for your carbon footprint not to get any bigger, you will need to use the dryer, along with the electricity, as little as possible. Not only is a dryer hard on the environment, no matter if it is gas or electric, but static electricity is increased by using it, especially in the winter. Hanging your clothing dry isn?t just good for the environment. You can save money by not having to replace your clothing as often, because they will last longer not being banged around in the dryer. You want to know more about web developer gold coast, but the other important side of the coin is that you have to get up and move on it. We all know how much people like to complain about things, and that is one thing that really hardly ever gets anything done. Hoping will not get it done, and we know you realize that; but then again so many people do yet that is all they do. The most critical aspect of this is making the decision that you will make a difference in your life. Adding houseplants are the best form of green living you can get. People buy houseplants for their looks, but they are more important than that. The air gets really dirty, but plants can keep it clean. There are various plants that work best for cleaning the air, and they are English Ivy, rubber plants, spider plants and peace lilies. Oxygen is released from these plants, after they take the toxins out of the air. How many plants you will need is dependent on the size of your house, but more is better than less. If your choices are expensive air purifiers or less expensive plants, the obvious choice would be the plants. A lot of people spend a lot of time cleaning, but they never really get anything clean. When it comes to home improvement, a good and thorough cleaning is the first step to any project. Using bad cleansers can be harmful to your health and the health of your home, so by changing to green cleansers will have the opposite effect. It certainly does seem that mobilizing to deal with it comes about only after the fact. Lydon on love : McGill Reporter

Posted on Friday, February 17, 2012

Research and Discovery

Psychology professor John Lydon. / Photo: Owen Egan

By Jim Hynes

Seventeenth Century French mathematician, physicist and theologian Blaise Pascal, a deep thinker if ever there was one, famously said: ?The heart has reasons that reason cannot know.? And while Pascal may have been pondering faith more than affairs of the romantic kind, you get the point ? love has been eluding our understanding for as long as people have been falling under its spell.

Nobody at McGill spends more time unravelling the mysteries of love and relationships than Professor John Lydon. A native of New York City who came to McGill?s Psychology department in 1990, Lydon is a world-renowned expert on attraction and commitment in intimate interpersonal relationships. One of his most recent studies looked at male-female attraction, and the impact of attachment anxiety in it, in the context of speed dating. And another of his previous studies examined the role of commitment in overcoming relationship adversities.

While Lydon has no illusions about having love all figured out, he knows more than a thing or two about what makes romantic relationships work, or not. On the occasion of Valentine?s Day, Lydon walked the Reporter through the minefield of romantic relationships, from initial attraction to the stability of long-term partnerships.

?Love at first sight?

You don?t need to be a love scientist to know that physical appearances matter when it comes to sparking attraction, especially when people first meet.

?We know from our speed dating studies that physical appearance accounts for an awful lot,? Lydon says.? When we had our people rate the appearance of the participants, their ratings pretty much predicted which speed daters got the most dates. We found that it counts for something like three-quarters of the variability.?

And that was true of both men and women, says Lydon.

?Attraction matters in that initial impression. It?s not all that matters, but it matters to everyone.?

But factors like the kind of relationship people are looking for also play a role in what attracts them to each other. Lydon cited a study by an American colleague who gave participants 20 ?mate dollars? to spend on the attributes they wanted in a romantic partner; looks, personality, warmth, intelligence, etc.

Go ahead and insert your joke here about men spending $19.99 in one area, but it turns out that women spent a lot of their mate bucks in the looks department too. Even more notable was the realization that people spent differently depending on whether they were seeking short-or long-term relationships.

?It turns out women, like men, will put a lot of money on physical appearance when it?s short-term, but when it?s long-term then women are going to look for things like warmth, and the same goes for men to a certain extent too,? Lydon says. ?In the short term, men are putting a lot of money on physical attractiveness, but if they can also get warmth, they?d like that. Long-term, men seem to be divided between warmth and attractiveness. Whereas the women, short-term they?re putting the money on attractiveness, but long-term, warmth mattered more.?

While the speed dating study provided plenty of material for the study of attraction in general, its specific focus was on what Lydon and his associates call the ?anxiously attached,? people whose critical relationships in childhood left them insecure about their adult relationships. During the study, they noted that a person?s anxiety was another important factor in their speed dating success, or lack of it.

?Getting to know you?

?We looked at how people?s social anxiety or their insecurity about being accepted by others can be a handicap. Within three minutes (the time each speed dater spent with each of the other participants) people seem to implicitly pick up on those who come across as more worried about their relationships,? Lydon says.

So what happens after initial attraction, when the novelty of it all has been tempered and people have stopped trying to present themselves in the best light? Maybe the object of your affection likes reality TV shows, and watches them in sweat pants. Maybe you?re a card-carrying member of the NDP and your partner voted Conservative. Can you have a future together?

?If things are working out, and people are getting along and spending more and more time together, then these interesting issues, like how are they going to get along, come into play,? Lydon says. ?And the more time you spend together, you start discovering differences or conflicts of interest. It becomes a question of how you are going to resolve those things. And some people do resolve those, and accommodate each other and coordinate with each other. Those are the relationships that will progress. And that?s what?s very revealing in the long run.?

That long run will see a relationship undergo numerous transformations. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the part about the baby carriage. But then what? What happens to romantic love as time goes by? Does it deepen or grow stronger as the clich?s say? Why do some long-term relationships last, and grow stronger, while others fall apart?

?We know that people who are more committed have longer lasting relationships.? Lydon says. ?We also have a better idea now of why that commitment matters, and that is that people who are more committed to their relationships are more likely to do the sort of things that keep a relationship going when negative things happen. They are less likely to even notice the negative behaviours of their partner. And when they do notice them they?re more likely to discount them ??well, he probably had a bad day at work.?

?People who are committed are more likely to try and engage? they?re likely to talk in a constructive way about a negative thing, and to voice their concern but in a positive, secure way as opposed to just going on a negative rant. Also the people who are more committed are more willing to sacrifice for each other. And that builds the relationship over time.?

Counterfeit Drugs Becoming Big Business Worldwide

WASHINGTON -- The discovery that a fake version of the widely used cancer medicine Avastin is circulating in the United States is raising new fears that the multibillion-dollar drug-counterfeiting trade is increasingly making inroads in the U.S.

The criminal practice has largely been relegated to poor countries with lax regulations. But with more medicines and drug ingredients for sale in the U.S. being manufactured overseas, American authorities are afraid more counterfeits will find their way into this country, putting patients' lives at risk.

The Avastin discovery follows other recent instances in the U.S. of counterfeiting, involving such drugs as Viagra, the cholesterol medicine Lipitor and the weight-loss pill Alli.

"We do know there are counterfeits continuing to try and make their way onto the U.S. supply chain," said Connie Jung, an associate director in the Food and Drug Administration's office of drug security.

The FDA announced Tuesday it is investigating fake vials of Avastin that were sold to at least 19 doctors and clinics, including 16 sites in California, two in Texas and one in Chicago. Tests showed the vials did not contain the active ingredient in Avastin, which is given intravenously in hospitals, clinics and doctors' offices to treat several types of cancer.

The contents of the vials are still being analyzed, and the FDA said it has not received any reports of patients who were harmed.

FDA officials said the counterfeit Avastin was imported from Britain and distributed by Volunteer Distribution, a wholesaler based in Gainesboro, Tenn. British regulators notified the FDA about the products in December, but the agency didn't confirm they were fake until last week.

The FDA gave assurances Wednesday that the U.S. remains one of the most secure pharmaceutical markets in the world. But the news sent cancer doctors scrambling to check their records.

Mary Mathias, a nurse who orders drugs for one doctor on the FDA list ? Dr. Phillip L. Chatham in Granada Hills, Calif., ? said they had stopped using the company in question at least a year ago.

Because Avastin treatments are spaced one to two weeks apart, it is not likely that someone would get more than one infusion from the same vial. And because these are people facing a life-threatening disease, it is hard to say whether missing one treatment with the real drug would compromise their care.

Gauging harm from a counterfeit cancer treatment is nearly impossible, said Dr. Robert C. Young, former president of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia and now a consultant to cancer centers.

A colon cancer patient, for example, might receive 18 to 20 Avastin infusions over six months. Missing one dose seems unlikely to have a dramatic effect on survival odds, but it's not provable either way because cancer's course and a patient's response to treatment are not predictable, he said.

Counterfeits have traditionally been more of a concern in developing regions like Asia and Latin America, where as many as 30 percent of drugs sold are fake, according to the World Health Organization. The group estimates just 1 percent of drugs dispensed in the U.S. and other developed nations are fake.

But incidents of counterfeiting reported by drugmakers have increased steadily over the decade to more than 1,700 worldwide last year, though only 6 percent of those were in the U.S. There are few reliable estimates on the value of the global counterfeit drug trade, though most place it in the tens of billions.

Counterfeiting has become more prevalent as pharmaceutical supply chains increasingly stretch across continents. Over 80 percent of the active ingredients used in U.S. pharmaceuticals are now manufactured overseas, according to a recent congressional report, and experts say this has made it easier to move counterfeit products into this country.

"With today's transportation networks, it's no longer a stretch to move these materials from a source in Pakistan or India to the U.S." said Tom Kubic, president of Pharmaceutical Security Institute, a trade association set up by two dozen pharmaceutical companies.

In 2005, federal prosecutors indicted 11 employees of a Missouri business on charges of conspiring to sell $42 million in counterfeit Lipitor. It was manufactured in Costa Rica and illegally imported to the U.S., where it was sold to wholesalers.

Industry experts also say a combination of big profits and low penalties has made drug counterfeiting an increasingly attractive business for criminals in the U.S. and abroad.

A single vial of Avastin sells for $2,400, and the drug had nearly $2.7 billion in U.S. sales last year, while the sentence for drug counterfeiting in the United States is about three years in prison. That compares with 15 years for counterfeiting money.

John Clark, head of global security for Pfizer Inc., said counterfeiters can make several million dollars quickly and, if they're caught, get off with as little as six months in jail. He also said counterfeiters can set up an operation at a fairly low cost ? perhaps $50,000, including about $20,000 for a pill press.

"It's a no-brainer for criminal organizations that it's worth a gamble," Clark said.

Clark said Pfizer's anti-counterfeiting team around the world has seen a number of fake vaccines and biologic drugs sold in developing countries, not just pill-based drugs.

"They're getting much more sophisticated," often getting ahold of legitimate vials that had held such medicines, from patients, trash cans or recycling operations, and then filling them with oil or water.

Lacrosse suspect absent at time of death: witness (Reuters)

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Reuters) ? Former University of Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely V split from his friends briefly about the same time prosecutors say he murdered his ex-girlfriend, according to a friend who testified Wednesday.

After returning to pals who were drinking in his apartment, friend Ken Clausen said, Huguely, 24, lied about his whereabouts and resorted to "a blank stare."

After a week of testimony in a murder trial that has brought national media attention to the quiet college town of Charlottesville, Virginia, prosecutors closed with a series of witnesses who called Huguely loud and belligerently drunk the night Yeardley Love died.

But when Huguely returned from about a half-hour hiatus, a friend testified, he was quiet and his account of his whereabouts was puzzling.

"There's no doubt in my mind that there was a change in his demeanor," said Clausen, who had been drinking in Huguely's apartment when Huguely returned after midnight.

According to Clausen, Huguely said he had visited a lower level of his apartment complex during his absence and socialized with two men: Will Bolton and Chris Clements, who Huguely described as "drunk."

Huguely's story raised a red flag because Clements had been writing a school paper that night, Clausen said. Clements also testified he turned Hugely away and did not drink that day.

"There's no reason to lie about something like that," Clausen said in court Wednesday, adding that he repeatedly asked: "'George, what's wrong with you?'"

"He had no response," Clausen said. "He had kind of a blank stare on his face."

Neuropathologists testified Tuesday that Love, 22, of Cockeysville, Maryland, died from blunt force trauma to the head that night in May 2010.

Prosecutors say Huguely walked into Love's apartment drunk, kicked in her bedroom door, slammed her head against the wall and left her to die.

The fellow senior university lacrosse players had been in an on-again, off-again relationship for about two years leading up to her death.

Huguely admitted in a videotaped police interview played for jurors last week that he kicked in Love's bedroom door, wrestled with her and "may have shook her a little bit." He claimed she had bloodied herself by banging her own head against the wall.

Huguely was in her apartment for eight to 10 minutes, he told police, but said he didn't hurt her.

His attorneys have suggested Love, who had been drinking that night, died from an "accident."

Huguely, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, which include first-degree murder, robbery, burglary at night, breaking and entering, grand larceny and murder during a robbery.

The defense is now presenting its case in the trial, which could continue into next week.

Israel, Iran battle over who's behind string of bombings

Israel blames Iran for Thai explosions

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Thai authorities charge two men in connection with blasts in Bangkok
  • Malaysian police arrest a third man in connection with the bombings in Thailand
  • A Thai official says materials used in Bangkok bombs are similar to those in India and Georgia
  • Iran denies accusations by Israel that it was behind the bombings

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- Israel and Iran traded accusations Wednesday over a string of bombings in other countries, with Israel pointing fingers at Tehran and the Iranian regime calling such claims a "prelude" to an Israeli attack.

The fight came as Thai authorities charged two Iranians in connection with a string of blasts in Bangkok, and a Thai official drew a tentative link to attacks this week aimed at Israeli officials in India and Georgia.

The materials used in the explosive devices were similar, a senior Thai security official said, according to Thailand's state-run news agency, MCOT.

Malaysian police also arrested a man in connection with the bombings in Thailand, authorities said.

"Iran is a threat to the stability of the world. They are targeting innocent diplomats," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "The international community has to denounce the Iranian actions and to indicate red lines concerning the Iranian aggression."

Ramin Mehmanparast, a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, "condemned the blasts and said that Israeli agents are often the perpetrators of such terrorist acts," Iran's state-run Press TV said in an article on its website.

And state-run Iranian news agency IRNA quoted an analyst as saying the Israeli allegations against Iran involving the bombings in India and Thailand are "a prelude to terrorist attacks against the Islamic Republic."

But Netanyahu, speaking in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, called Iran the leading terror in the world. "Right now in the past days the Iranian terror has been witnessed by all," he said.

The attacks and accusations come amid high tensions between Israel and Iran. Israel had made clear it is considering attacking Iran's nuclear facilities. Israel, the United States and other countries are concerned Iran is building nuclear weaponry, despite Tehran's insistence that its nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes.

Iranian officials openly antagonize Israel, and Israeli officials have described the regime in Tehran as an existential threat.

The first bomb Tuesday went off in a rental house in Bangkok believed to be leased to foreigners, according to Thai authorities. After the blast, two of the men left the scene while a third detonated two more bombs -- one when a taxi driver refused to give him a ride, and another when he tried to throw a bomb at police officers as they closed in on him.

The last bomb exploded near the man, blowing off one of his legs, authorities said. He was taken to Chulalongkorn General Hospital for treatment and Iranian documents were found on him.

Another man arrested at the airport holds an Iranian passport and is one of the two men who left the bombing at the house, the Thai government said, adding that he was identified as Mohammad Hasai, 42. He was about to leave for Malaysia, the government said.

Authorities charged those two men with several offenses, including illegal possession of explosives and intent to kill a police officer, said Gen. Pansiri Prapawat, deputy police commander.

Before Malaysia announced the arrest of a man in connection with the bombings Wednesday, Thai authorities had said they were looking for a third man, as well as a woman who they believe was renting the house.

Israeli Foreign Ministry personnel based overseas have been on alert in recent weeks to the heightened possibility of attacks at Israeli facilities by Hezbollah, the Lebanese Muslim militant group and political party backed by Iran.

Sunday marked the fourth anniversary of the death of Hezbollah leader Imad Mugniyah in a car bombing in Damascus, Syria. Hezbollah holds Israel responsible and has vowed revenge.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the level of alert in the country had been raised following a security assessment after the overseas incidents in New Delhi and Tbilisi, the capitals of India and Georgia.

The alert means patrols will be heightened in and around various public areas inside Israel, and around Israeli embassies and offices worldwide.

In the Monday incidents, a device attached to an Israeli Embassy van in New Delhi exploded and injured four people. Another device was found on an embassy car in Tbilisi but it was safety detonated.

Iran has also denied involvement in those events, which are still being investigated.

The materials used in the Bangkok bombs had many similar characteristics to those used in India, said Wichean Potephosree, secretary-general of the Thai National Security Council.

The Israeli government issued a travel advisory this year for citizens traveling to Thailand after Thai security officials arrested a man in January connected with a planned attack in the country.

Police charged the man, Atris Hussein, after finding "initial chemical materials that could produce bombs" in an area just outside Bangkok. Police said Hussein, who also holds a Swedish passport, led them to the location.

Authorities accuse Hussein of trying to attack spots in Bangkok that are popular with Western tourists and say he is believed to belong to Hezbollah, the Shiite Muslim group active in Lebanon that the United States views as a terrorist organization.

Potephosree said Wednesday that Thai authorities do not believe there is any link between Hussein and the blasts in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Karan's strong woman can borrow from the boys (AP)

NEW YORK ? Donna Karan makes every outfit she designs for a strong, confident woman, and for fall, that woman is comfortable enough in her own skin to wear heavily tailored menswear looks.

Her runway show, held Monday on Day 5 of New York Fashion Week, featured tailcoats and top hats, done on a skewed scale by milliner Stephen Jones. The opening look for her signature label was a gray-and-black pinstripe jacket with a crisp white taffeta bodysuit ? Karan's signature piece ? that was fashioned to look like a button-down shirt.

She also offered long coats with strong shoulders and lapel collars, and a riding jacket paired with pinstripe mohair pants.

Skirts and dresses were mostly long with sharp-cut knife pleats for movement. Tops were mostly slim and tailored with nothing frilly, not even when she added sparkle.

When she got to the finale, however, Karan was fully in touch with her feminine side, sending down a red-hot scarlet-colored, stretch-satin evening gown.

There was a hint of a retro 1920s gangster vibe in both the masculine and feminine silhouettes, especially the accessories including oxfords and spat booties.

"How do you define a woman?" she asked in her notes. "Someone who carries the world on her shoulder. She's never an either/or. She's always and."

Donna Karan's namesake line is her top-tier designer collection, more expensive and luxurious than her younger, contemporary DKNY label.
