Rosetta Stone Acquires Kid-Focused Language-Learning Startup GoGo Lingo

Rosetta Stone, for those unfamiliar, are the makers of the oft-advertised language learning software of the same name. The 20-year-old Virginia-based company went public in 2009, and today makes learning software for over 30 languages that is used in over 150 countries. Yet, in spite of its brand recognition, a number of translation and language-learning startups have begun to pop up with savvy online solutions, which has prompted Rosetta Stone to move to boost both its kid-friendly learning options and its digital distribution. In so doing, Rosetta Stone is today announcing that it has completed the acquisition of Los Angeles-based language learning startup, GoGo Lingo. Founded back in 2008 by Afsoun Yazdian, who developed GoGoLingo's proprietary "Playful Immersion" method while at Stanford, a language learning method designed to help kids ages 3 to 7 learn Spanish through implicit absorption.

Apple = Sony? Don?t You Believe It

Forrester CEO George Colony has written a controversial blog post provocatively titled "Apple = Sony" in which he argues that now that Steve Jobs is dead, Apple is coasting on fumes and will begin its inevitable decline within the next two to four years. Much of Colony's argument comes down to this assertion: that there is no longer a 'singular charismatic leader' at Apple. When it comes to reality distortion fields, Tim Cook may be no Steve Jobs, but much of what Colony says about the vacuum of leadership at Cupertino is completely untrue. In fact, Apple's arguably in better shape now than it ever was when Jobs was at the helm.

Mexico's 'smoking mountain' lives up to its name (+video)

Mexican officials have raised the alert level for the volcano, Popocat?petl, as it spews ash and steam into the air and onto nearby communities.

Mexico's Popocat?petl, North America's second largest volcano, is acting up.

Beginning?Monday, red-hot rock, ash, and steam have begun spewing from the volcano a half-mile into the sky.?In response, Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Centre raised their alert level to stage five (out of seven). ?Several schools have closed and local officials have readied emergency shelters.

Popocat?petl belongs to the group of stratovolcanos, otherwise known as composite volcanoes, which also includes the likes of Mount Shasta in California and Mount St. Helens in Washington.

In general, stratovolcanos are large, steep-sided, symmetrical cones composed of "alternating layers of lava flows, volcanic ash, cinders, blocks, and bombs," according to the US Geologic Survey.

Popocat?petl is 17,900-feet tall, glacier-clad and contains a steep-walled, 800-1,500-foot-deep crater.?Its name means "smoking mountain" in Nahuatl, the region's indigenous language.

Hazards created by volcanic activity like this may include ash, lahars, and pyroclastic flows. Lahars are mudflows created by water mixing with volcanic materials like ash, while pyroclastic flows are caused by superheated gas combined with rock. Pyroclastic flows are relatively rare at Popocat?petl, however.

More than 30 million people live within view of the volcano. It sits about 40 miles southeast of Mexico City, and is visible from the capital on a clear day.?

During the last major eruption of Popocat?petl in 2000, more than 50,000 people were evacuated.

Engadget HD Podcast 296 - 04.25.2012

It took an extra day, but we've got new Engadget HD podcast for you covering DVR news from such luminaries as whiteman Technologies, Dish Network and TiVo. Of course, they're not the only ones busy over the last few days as Cablevision and Time Warner Cable added new wrinkle to their IPTV offerings and DirecTV brings the DVR to hotels. On the business end of things we've got quarterly numbers from Netflix, Verizon and AT&T, while DTS and SRS Labs are getting together to do... something.
