Iran hedges on nuclear talks with six powers or U.S.

MUNICH (Reuters) - Iran said on Sunday it was open to a U.S. offer of direct talks on its nuclear program and that six world powers had suggested a new round of nuclear negotiations this month, but without committing itself to either proposal.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve a dispute over Iran's nuclear program, which Tehran says is peaceful but the West suspects is intended to give Iran the capability to build a nuclear bomb, have been all but deadlocked for years, while Iran has continued to announce advances in the program.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said a suggestion on Saturday by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden that Washington was ready for direct talks with Iran if Tehran was serious about negotiations was a "step forward".

"We take these statements with positive consideration. I think this is a step forward but ... each time we have come and negotiated it was the other side unfortunately who did not heed ... its commitment," Salehi said at the Munich Security Conference where Biden made his overture a day earlier.

He also complained to Iran's English-language Press TV of "other contradictory signals", pointing to the rhetoric of "keeping all options on the table" used by U.S. officials to indicate they are willing to use force to keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

"This does not go along with this gesture (of talks) so we will have to wait a little bit longer and see if they are really faithful this time," Salehi said.

Iran is under a tightening web of sanctions. Israel has also hinted it may strike if diplomacy and international sanctions fail to curb Iran's nuclear drive.

In Washington, Army General Martin Dempsey, the top U.S. military officer, said in an interview broadcast on Sunday that the United States has the capability to stop any Iranian effort to build nuclear weapons, but Iranian "intentions have to be influenced through other means."

Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made his comments on NBC's program "Meet the Press," speaking alongside outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

Panetta said current U.S. intelligence indicated that Iranian leaders have not made a decision to proceed with the development of a nuclear weapon.

"But every indication is they want to continue to increase their nuclear capability," he said. "And that's a concern. And that's what we're asking them to stop doing."

The new U.S. secretary of state, John Kerry, has said he will give diplomacy every chance of solving the Iran standoff.

THE BEST CHANCE

With six-power talks making little progress, some experts say talks between Tehran and Washington could be the best chance, perhaps after Iran has elected a new president in June.

Negotiations between Iran and the six powers - Russia, China, the United States, Britain, France and Germany - have been deadlocked since a meeting last June.

EU officials have accused Iran of dragging its feet in weeks of haggling over the date and venue for new talks.

Salehi said he had "good news", having heard that the six powers would meet in Kazakhstan on February 25.

A spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who coordinates the efforts of the six powers, confirmed that she had proposed talks in the week of February 25 but noted that Iran had not yet accepted.

Kazakhstan said it was ready to host the talks in either Astana or Almaty.

Salehi said Iran had "never pulled back" from the stuttering negotiations with the six powers. "We still are very hopeful. There are two packages, one package from Iran with five steps and the other package from the (six powers) with three steps."

Iran raised international concern last week by announcing plans to install and operate advanced uranium enrichment machines. The EU said the move, potentially shortening the path to weapons-grade material, could deepen doubts about the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel's mission to stop its arch-enemy from acquiring nuclear weapons was "becoming more complex, since the Iranians are equipping themselves with cutting-edge centrifuges that shorten the time of (uranium) enrichment".

"We must not accept this process," said Netanyahu, who is trying to form a new government after winning an election last month. Israel is generally believed to be the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons.

'Downton' family draws together after loss

Lord Grantham's actions on the night of Sybil's death have made his wife push him away from her.

How does "Downton Abbey" rebound from such a draining, heart-wrenching episode as last week's? Quietly, and draped in the same sense one has when trapped in real grief, that nothing is moving forward, and that black will be worn forever. This week's episode was a subtle one, with threads gradually reweaving themselves, but slowly, life is moving on with a giant hole in the family fabric where Lady Sybil once was.

Are you getting the sense yet that this show does not like to actually show major events? We didn't see much of Mary and Matthew's wedding, and we also skip Sybil's funeral. Which actually works well -- after all, the cameraman doesn't need to show ever step of Lord Grantham and the dog walking to the house in order for us to realize they got there. So the funeral's over, but the grieving is not, nor will it be any time soon.

Cora can't forgive Robert for not taking any chance to save Sybil, and for siding with snooty Harley Street doctor Sir Phillip Tapsell over their own Dr. Clarkson. Seeing the suffering, the Dowager Countess takes things into her own hands, pulling Clarkson aside and getting him to research how much of a chance Sybil would have actually had with a C-section. She sets up a meeting, and he tells Cora and Robert that she probably would have died anyway -- though he probably believes that a little less than he makes it sound. Still, it works, and Cora and Robert collapse in each other's arms, a couple again, while the Dowager subtly looks away.

Ethel the prostitute-turned-cook was back again this week. With some coaching from Mrs. Patmore, she produced a delicious luncheon for Cora, the Dowager, and the daughters, which only got interesting when Robert barged in to rant about the scandal of eating streetwalker-cooked food, ordering his womenfolk to leave. Which none of them did.

In the staff quarters, Thomas is continuing his subtle, 1920s-style form of flirting with hot new footman Jimmy, who warns O'Brien that he's this close to going to Carson to complain. Ivy's gone full-on harlot by wearing rouge. The best bit from the staff room, other than Jimmy showing he's a better fox trotter than Alfred, was Mrs. Patmore snapping "You know the trouble with you lot? You?re all in love with the wrong people!"

Hey, what about the baby? Didn't someone have a baby? Oh yes, the motherless newborn is barely seen. Tom wants to name her Sybil which Robert thinks is "ghoulish," and have her baptized Catholic, which Robert thinks is even worse. And when Mary holds her with Matthew at her side, it's impossible not to wonder if they'll somehow end up adopting their little niece.

And finally, finally, we might soon be done with the horribly dull Bates-in-jail plot. Lawyer Murray met with Mrs. Bartlett, who wouldn't give in to him. But when Bates slammed cellmate Craig up against a wall and threatened to expose the behind-bars drug trade, things suddenly came together. All it took was one good threat, and Craig and Co. convinced Mrs. Bartlett to fess up, which magically set the gears for Bates' release into motion. And may we never see those dreary prison walls again.

President wants to be Iran's first astronaut

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may be headed to space one day, if a recent public statement is to be believed.

Speaking at an exhibition of Iran's space achievements in Tehran, the Islamic Republic's president said he would be the first human launched to space aboard an Iranian rocket, the Mehr news agency reported.

"I am ready to be the first human to be sent to space by Iranian scientists," Ahmadinejad said.

The comment came just a week after Iran launched a live monkey into space inside a capsule named Pishgam ("Pioneer" in Farsi), which was lofted aboard a suborbital rocket.

"Sending living things to space is the result of Iranian efforts and dedication of thousands of Iranian professional scientists," Ahmadinejad said, according to the Mehr news agency.

Iranian officials said the monkey's launch was a scientific precursor to sending humans to space, though international experts have been skeptical, worrying that the same rocket technology used in these experiments could be applied to launch ballistic missiles carrying nuclear warheads.

Ahmadinejad dismissed those concerns and said Iranian scientists should be on the lookout for international sabotage efforts on its space program, according to the Mehr news agency.

"We should admit that some (powers) do not tolerate Iranian greatness and growth. Iranians (have) incited devils' hatred by Iranian idealism, perfectionism and being human," he said.

If Ahmadinejad does eventually go to space, he will not be the first Iranian to do so.

That distinction is held by Iranian-American engineer and entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari, who paid to visit the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 2006. She was the first, and so far the only, female space tourist.

Animal communicator helps pets and their loved ones

Animals can?t talk. They can?t tell their owners what hurts, or what they?re feeling, or where they are if they are lost.

Betsy Groller of Amity Township can help.

She is an animal communicator through 4 Paw Reiki LLC.

Groller stumbled into realizing she had these less-than-traditional skills after trying yoga a few years ago. Yoga led to her discovering Reiki, which is integral to her work with animals.

"Reiki is a Japanese method of healing that relaxes the body; it elicits a healing response," Groller explained of the energy work she performs both in person and remotely on the pets of her clients.

She said that Reiki can help with pain management, the immune system, anxiety and depression, and can promote relaxation.

When Groller does Reiki in person, she uses her hands to either lightly touch or stay close to the body of an animal.

"Bodies are made up of energy, and in doing Reiki, I?m a conduit for the energy," she said.

Knowing animals can?t vocalize what physical pain might be bothering them, especially when a veterinarian can?t give a clear answer on the problem, those who come to Groller for help know that she can at least bring some level of healing to their pets.

Soon after beginning to practice Reiki on animals, she started recognizing that she continually experienced flashes and images of words that seemed like they must be associated with the pets.

Mentioning these details to the owners, she learned that they indeed matched the particulars of their animals? lives. One early instance involved her detecting the image of ice cream. When she asked the owners about it, they confirmed that they?d just taken the whole family out for ice cream.

Lori Swenk of Exeter Township reached out to Groller in September when she knew her 15-year-old cat Bogey would soon die. Groller communicated to Bogey about the upcoming vet visit to put him to sleep, but she quickly received the fierce response of "no cold tables" from the cat.

Not long after that, Groller texted Swenk, letting her know that Bogey wanted her to pick him up. Worried before that it would hurt him to hold him, Swenk finally decided to pick him up.

Bogey died in her arms.

Anita Smith of Northampton Township, Bucks County, found Groller through a web search after her 12-year-old Jack Russell terriers, Daphne and Rudy, had become suddenly aggressive and vicious with each other after 11 years of a happy life together.

"Daphne seemed to be the more aggressive of the two," Smith said. "Groller identified Daphne?s personality to a T in her animal communication work, and after she began sending Reiki to her, she was much less rigid and more relaxed."

Groller let Smith know that she sensed a problem with Daphne?s left eye. Once addressed at the vet again, they discovered that she had macular degeneration. This made sense of why she acted defensive when Rudy approached her.

"We had gone the traditional route but were told it was just behavioral, and that sometimes at that age, they grow tired of being with each other," Smith said.

But Groller?s findings showed that the diagnosis wasn?t very accurate, and the eye problem was not pinpointed until Groller?s efforts explained the sudden fighting.

Daphne and Rudy must be separated in their home, but understanding the actual issue has brought a lot of comfort to Smith.

Once Groller learned that she could communicate with animals, she opened up her talents even more by assisting in finding lost pets. Most of her work has been in Dauphin County.

Groller asks the owner to send her a picture of the animal and the home address.

"But this must be used in conjunction with the owners actively searching for the pet; that is very important," she said.

Groller has absorbed visions of maps, a guard rail with paw prints near it and other indicators of place in relationship to where an animal is.

She keeps in touch regularly with the lost pet?s owners and rescue search teams, giving them the clues she has, and in most cases, success has been the great relief. The animals are almost always found, with much gratitude expressed from the owners.

Groller most recently helped to locate a lost dog on Jan. 16. A 2-year-old pit bull mix named Keely in West Virginia became lost the day before.

"The owner?s friend, who I worked with on a previous lost dog case and also animal communication work, hired me because the owner was skeptical," Groller said. "Keely guided me to a different location than where the owner had searched, and she was found in the area I showed the owner on the map."

Groller often visualizes a map of an area when she is working on communicating with a lost pet. And while she admitted that her maps are not always completely accurate in the end, she usually takes in some important details that do help those searching for the lost pets.

"I was shown that Keely might be injured, and that there was something to do with a tree," Groller explained. "Also, her throat seemed to need a lot of Reiki energy; she was found with her foot caught in a steel trap, and it was tied to a tree."

Groller later learned that Keely?s throat had become hoarse from barking.

"Our pets are so unconditional in their love for us when there is so much bad in news, situations and the economy," Groller said, "and yet animals never really ask us for much. They are guided into our lives for a reason."

(AP) ? Twitter confirmed Friday that it had become the latest victim in a number of high-profile cyber-attacks against media companies, saying that hackers may have gained access to information on 250,000 of its more than 200 million active users.

The social media giant said in a blog posting that earlier this week it detected attempts to gain access to its user data. It shut down one attack moments after it was detected.

But it discovered that the attackers may have stolen user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 users. Twitter reset the pilfered passwords and sent emails advising affected users.

The online attack comes on the heels of recent hacks into the computer systems of U.S. media and technology companies, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Both American newspapers reported this week that their computer systems had been infiltrated by China-based hackers, likely to monitor media coverage the Chinese government deems important.

China has been accused of mounting a widespread, aggressive cyber-spying campaign for several years, trying to steal classified information and corporate secrets and to intimidate critics. The Chinese foreign ministry could not be reached for comment Saturday, but the Chinese government has said those accusations are baseless and that China itself is a victim of cyber-attacks.

"Chinese law forbids hacking and any other actions that damage Internet security," the Chinese Defense Ministry recently said. "The Chinese military has never supported any hacking activities."

Although Bob Lord, Twitter's director of information security said in the blog that the attack "was not the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it was an isolated incident."

"The attackers were extremely sophisticated, and we believe other companies and organizations have also been recently similarly attacked," Lord said. "For that reason we felt that it was important to publicize this attack while we still gather information, and we are helping government and federal law enforcement in their effort to find and prosecute these attackers to make the Internet safer for all users."

One expert said that the Twitter hack probably happened after an employee's home or work computer was compromised through vulnerabilities in Java, a commonly used computing language whose weaknesses have been well publicized.

Ashkan Soltani, an independent privacy and security researcher, said such a move would give attackers "a toehold" in Twitter's internal network, potentially allowing them either to sniff out user information as it traveled across the company's system or break into specific areas, such as the authentication servers that process users' passwords.

In a telephone interview Friday, Soltani said that the relatively small number of users affected suggested either that attackers weren't on the network long or that they were only able to compromise a subset of the company's servers.

Twitter is generally used to broadcast messages to the public, so the hacking might not immediately have yielded any important secrets. But the stolen credentials could be used to eavesdrop on private messages or track which Internet address a user is posting from.

That might be useful, for example, for an authoritarian regime trying to keep tabs on a journalist's movements.

"More realistically, someone could use that as an entry point into another service," Soltani said, noting that since few people bother using different passwords for different services, a password stolen from Twitter might be just as handy for reading a journalist's emails.

Iranian space official: Photo shows wrong monkey

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? One of two official packages of photos of Iran's famed simian space traveler depicted the wrong monkey, but a primate really did fly into space and return safely to Earth, a senior Iranian space official confirmed Saturday.

The two different monkeys shown in the photos released by Iran's state media caused some international observers to wonder whether the monkey had died in space or that the launch didn't go well.

One set of pictures showed a relatively dark-haired monkey. Another showed a different monkey ? strapped in a pod ? that had light gray hair and a distinctive red mole over its right eye.

Mohammad Ebrahimi told the The Associated Press that the monkey who traveled in space was named "Pishgam," the Farsi word for pioneer. Initially, the Iranian media said "Pishgam" was the rocket that took him on a 20-minute journey into space on Monday.

Ebrahimi said one set of pictures showed an archive photo of one of the alternate monkeys. He said three to five monkeys are simultaneously tested for such a flight and two or three are chosen for the launch. Finally, the one that is best suited for the mission and isn't stressed is chosen for the voyage.

State TV pictures seen by AP show the dark-haired monkey before and after the space flight, but a package of still pictures released by authorities showed the other monkey with the mole.

"I say this with certainty that the monkey is in good health and the space flight didn't have any physical effect on Pishgam," Ebrahimi said. "Some of the photos released by one of news agencies were not related to the time of flight. They were archive photos of the monkeys being prepared for the launch."

Jonathan McDowell, a Harvard astronomer who tracks rocket launchings and space activity, also said this week's monkey space flight was real, but he had a slightly different explanation for the photo mix-up. He claimed the light gray monkey with the mole died during a failed space mission in 2011.

"The monkey with the mole was the one launched in 2011 that died. The rocket failed. It did not get into space," McDowell said. "They just mixed that footage with the footage of the 2013 successful launch."

Iran has never confirmed that a monkey died in 2011, or that there was a failed mission that year.

Iran's space officials said sending the monkey into space was a step toward Tehran's goal of a manned space flight. However, the U.S. and its allies worry that the same technology used to launch rockets into space could also be used to develop long-range missiles.

With its ambitious aerospace program, Iran has said it wants to become a technological powerhouse for the Islamic world by 2026.

It's not the first time Iran has announced it had rocketed a live creature out of the Earth's atmosphere. The country sent a mouse, a turtle and some worms into space in 2010, officials said.

Pishgam was sent aboard an Explorer rocket and traveled to a height of 120 kilometers (72 miles), pushing into the threshold of space.

Ebrahimi said Iran plans to launch its first manned space mission within the next five to six years. He said it will be the first manned suborbital flight.

Hamid Fazeli, director of Iran's space agency, said this week that Iran will launch a bigger rocket carrying a larger animal to obtain greater safety assurances before sending a man into space.

Iran says it wants to put its own satellites into orbit to monitor natural disasters in the earthquake-prone nation, improve telecommunications and expand military surveillance in the region.

Medical illustrators and neurological imaging experts at Johns Hopkins have figured out how night-hunting owls can almost fully rotate their heads - by as much as 270 degrees in either direction - without damaging the delicate blood vessels in their necks and heads, and without cutting off blood supply to their brains.

In what may be the first use of angiography, CT scans and medical illustrations to examine the anatomy of a dozen of the big-eyed birds, the Johns Hopkins team, led by medical illustrator Fabian de Kok-Mercado, M.A., a recent graduate student in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, found four major biological adaptations designed to prevent injury from rotational head movements. The variations are all to the strigid animals' bone structure and vascular network needed to support its top-heavy head. The team's findings are acknowledged in the Feb.1 issue of the journal Science, as first-place prize winners in the posters and graphics category of the National Science Foundation's 2012 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge.

"Until now, brain imaging specialists like me who deal with human injuries caused by trauma to arteries in the head and neck have always been puzzled as to why rapid, twisting head movements did not leave thousands of owls lying dead on the forest floor from stroke," says study senior investigator and interventional neuroradiologist Philippe Gailloud, M.D. "The carotid and vertebral arteries in the neck of most animals - including owls and humans - are very fragile and highly susceptible to even minor tears of the vessel lining," adds Gailloud, an associate professor in the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Sudden gyrations of the head and neck in humans have been known to stretch and tear blood vessel linings, producing clots that can break off and cause a deadly embolism or stroke. Researchers say these injuries are commonplace, often resulting from whiplashing car accidents, but also after jarring roller coaster rides and chiropractic manipulations gone awry.

To solve the puzzle, the Johns Hopkins team studied the bone structure and complex vasculature in the heads and necks of snowy, barred and great horned owls after their deaths from natural causes. An injectible contrast dye was used to enhance X-ray imaging of the birds' blood vessels, which were then meticulously dissected, drawn and scanned to allow detailed analysis.

The most striking team finding came after researchers injected dye into the owls' arteries, mimicking blood flow, and manually turned the animals' heads. Blood vessels at the base of the head, just under the jaw bone, kept getting larger and larger, as more of the dye entered, and before the fluid pooled in reservoirs. This contrasted starkly with human anatomical ability, where arteries generally tend to get smaller and smaller, and do not balloon as they branch out.

Researchers say these contractile blood reservoirs act as a trade-off, allowing owls to pool blood to meet the energy needs of their large brains and eyes, while they rotate their heads. The supporting vascular network, with its many interconnections and adaptations, helps minimize any interruption in blood flow.

"Our in-depth study of owl anatomy resolves one of the many interesting neurovascular medical mysteries of how owls have adapted to handle extreme head rotations," says de Kok-Mercado, now a scientific illustrator and animator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Moreover, says Gailloud, "our new study results show precisely what morphological adaptations are needed to handle such head gyrations and why humans are so vulnerable to osteopathic injury from chiropractic therapy. Extreme manipulations of the human head are really dangerous because we lack so many of the vessel-protecting features seen in owls."

The first anatomical variation they discovered was in the owl neck, where one of the major arteries feeding the brain passes through bony holes in the vertebrae. The hollow cavities were approximately 10 times larger in diameter than the vertebral artery traveling through it. The researchers say the extra space in the transverse foraminae, as the holes surrounding the vertebral arteries are known, creates a set of cushioning air pockets that allow the artery to move around when twisted. Twelve of the 14 cervical vertebrae in the owl's neck were found to have this adaptation.

"In humans, the vertebral artery really hugs the hollow cavities in the neck. But this is not the case in owls, whose structures are specially adapted to allow for greater arterial flexibility and movement," says de Kok-Mercado.

The team also found that the owl's vertebral artery enters the neck higher up than in other birds - going in at the owl's 12th cervical vertebrae instead of the owl's 14th cervical vertebrae - allowing for more vessel room and slack.

Among de Kok-Mercado and Gailloud's other findings were small vessel connections between the carotid and vertebral arteries - not usually seen in adult humans - that allow blood to be exchanged between the two blood vessels. The researchers say these so-called anastomoses, including a vessel connection called a patent trigeminal artery, allow for uninterrupted blood flow to the brain, even if one route is blocked during extreme neck rotation.

Researchers next plan to examine hawk anatomy to see if other bird species possess the same adaptive features for head rotation.
