The Milton sport scene?

The sports scene is Milton has been evolving since the early 80?s; just ask one of its pioneers, Gary Wellstead. ?Gary has been involved in Milton sports at a grass-roots level since 1981. Gary is a founding member of the Men?s Basketball League and an advocate for sports in general. Gary was privileged to sit on the consultative committees when the ideas and plans for the Milton Leisure Centre and Milton Sports Complex were conceived and executed.

Gary has watched the sport and fitness scene evolve over the past thirty years and much has changed. Gary raised his four adult children in Milton, and they, too, were part of the evolving sports scene. He has also watched his basketball league grow to attract a number of men in Milton and, in fact, feels privileged to have his daughter help out and play as well. There is much opportunity for the league to grow, and Gary hopes to help spear-head and manage this growth accordingly. They play two nights a week; Monday evenings at the Milton Sports Complex and Wednesday evenings at the Milton Leisure Centre. On occasion, Gary helps organize charity events where the proceeds go a local cause. Gary and his team have been involved in a number of events over the years and have hosted basketball tournaments that have attracted teams from all over.

To learn more about the future of sports and fitness in Milton, we turned to Steve Palmer, Manager of Recreation & Sport with the Town of Milton. Steve has been directly involved with the planning and implementation of such sport attractions as the Milton Sports Centre, and the new and exciting Velodrome, in addition to planning for the new Sherwood Community Centre and indoor turf facility. ??Listening to Steve talk about Milton?s growth related to sports and fitness is exciting. For example, the Velodrome will serve cyclists and athletes both locally and from around the globe, and that alone will help bring international acclaim to the community of Milton, which is already recognized nationally as the fastest growing community in Canada. In addition, Milton?s own Sport Hall of Fame is currently under development and will be located at the Milton Sports Centre. Steve shared his enthusiasm for being involved in sport development in the community.

?We feel honoured to be playing an integral role in the development of sports opportunities in Milton,? says Steve. ?Our focus is on providing as many venues as possible for residents and visitors to be active as part of a healthier lifestyle.?

Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have identified a key link between stem cell factors that fuel ovarian cancer?s growth and patient prognosis. The study, which paves the way for developing novel targeted ovarian cancer therapies, is published online in the current issue of Cell Cycle.

Lead author Yingqun Huang, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, and her colleagues have demonstrated a connection between two concepts that are revolutionizing the way cancer is treated.

First, the ?cancer stem cell? idea suggests that at the heart of every tumor there is a small subset of difficult-to-identify tumor cells that fuel the growth of the bulk of the tumor. This concept predicts that ordinary therapies typically kill the bulk of tumor cells while leaving a rich environment for continued growth of the stem cell tumor population.

The second concept, dubbed ?seed and soil,? defines a critical role for the tumor cells? ?microenvironment,? which is the special environment required for cancer cell growth and spread.

"Both concepts have particular relevance for the treatment of adult solid tumors such as ovarian cancer, which has been notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat,? said co-author Nita J. Maihle, M.D., professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences and a member of Yale Cancer Center. ?Ovarian cancer patients are Plagued by recurrences of tumor cells that are resistant to chemotherapy, ultimately leading to uncontrolled cancer growth and death.?

In this study, Huang and her colleagues were able to define a molecular basis for the interplay between these two concepts in ovarian cancer. They did this by using sophisticated gene sequencing methods to demonstrate a regulatory link between the stem cell factor Lin28 and the signaling molecule bone morphogenic protein 4 (BMP4).

?These results are supported by the latest molecular ovarian cancer prognosis data, which also suggest an active role for the tumor microenvironment in ovarian carcinogenesis,? said Huang and Maihle. ?Together these studies reveal new targets for the development of cancer therapies.?

Other authors on the study include Wei Ma, Jing Ma, Jie Xu, Chong Qiao, Adam Branscum, Andres Cardenas, Andre T. Baron, Peter Schwartz, and Nita J. Maihle.

S. Africa sends troops to Central African Republic

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The South African presidency announced Sunday that is sending 400 army troops to Central African Republic to help the country's army as it faces a threat from a coalition of rebel groups.

Sending soldiers to Central African Republic is part of South Africa's efforts "to bring about peace and stability in the region," said the announcement by President Jacob Zuma's office.

Central African Republic's neighboring countries Cameroon, Gabon and Republic of Congo already have sent about 120 troops each to help stabilize the country confronted by the rebellion.

Chad, a longtime ally of President Francois Bozize's government, also has provided hundreds of forces who are fortifying the road to the capital, Bangui, to prevent rebels from reaching the seat of power, a city of 700,000.

The South African National Defense Force troops will "assist with capacity building of the CAR Defense Force and will also assist CAR with the planning and implementation of the disarmament, demobilization and re-integration processes" to deal with the country's rebels, said Zuma's statement.

The rebels had pledged to halt their advance pending peace talks in Gabon that are due to start Tuesday. However, residents say rebels seized two more towns over the weekend, though they are not en route to the capital.

A dozen towns have come under rebel control since the rebel alliance calling itself Seleka began its offensive on Dec. 10.

Negotiations between the rebels and the Bozize government are set to begin in the nearby country of Gabon on Tuesday.

Global Warming? "Seeing is believing."

The most important documentary of the year.

"Chasing Ice" is a grand adventure, a visual amazement and a powerful warning.

If you're looking for eye-popping evidence that the world's glaciers are melting, don't miss the small-scale but spectacular documentary, Chasing Ice.

The rapid disappearance of ice mountains, filmed over a period of years, is compressed through time-lapse technology into minutes and seconds. The speeded-up effect is harrowing and also, disturbingly, eerily beautiful.

The movie might have given us a bit less of Balog and a bit more of the startling sequences he produced.

Chasing Ice will open your eyes to a world you've never seen before and it will make you think. But whether any of us can change anything is a different matter altogether.

While skeptics continue to doubt global warming is a man-made phenomenon - Rush Limbaugh called warnings about it "garbage science" - "Chasing Ice" leaves little doubt it is occurring.

It's an absorbing and vital watch.

It's like watching our world disappear.

A few scientists pop their heads in here, a few charts are deployed, but Chasing Ice is powered primarily by the imagery, stark, irrefutable evidence that the planet is warming, not in one or two isolated places but everywhere.

"Chasing Ice" is a beautiful film to watch, especially on the big screen. But the documentary's visual pleasures come with a heavy dose of guilt.

It's sobering stuff but the film's impact is somewhat diminished by Orlowski's reverential profile of Balog, who continues to crusade despite the toll his endeavours have taken on his body.

The documentary feels a little slight but the images speak for themselves ...

Is this about the hazards of global warming or the awesomeness of James Balog? Not entirely sure...

If any film can convert the climate-change sceptics, Chasing Ice would be it: here, seeing really is believing.

While more detailed scientific analysis and greater discussion of impacts would have been welcome, the film's visual rhetoric is solid.

National Geographic photographer James Balog illustrates climate change with time-lapsed records of glacial retreat.

A project of heroic, Herzogian endeavour. Mad, you might say. But probably not as mad as what the rest of us are doing about climate change: namely almost nothing.

Utterly engaging in its demonstration of the planet's shocking climate change and is thoroughly absorbing to watch.

Chasing Ice is a uniquely visual adventure with a chilling message warmed by Balog's humanity.

Still an eco-sceptic? Clap your eyes on this lot. Awe-inspiring, terrifying, transcendently beautiful, and absolutely weighted with significance for the future of the planet.

This is a well made Documentary that becomes very involving because it's just as much about Balog's journey as it is about global warming.

  Richard Belzer originated the role of John Munch on "Homicide: Life on the Street" in 1993. He's appeared on more than nine different shows as Detective Munch, including "Law & Order: SVU," where he's been a series regular for 14 seasons. Belzer has played Munch for 19 years.

• Peter Falk, Columbo (19 Years)

  Peter Falk became synonymous with the role of Columbo, one he played from 1968 all the way up until 2003. Falk took over the role of Columbo in the TV movie "Prescription: Murder." While he started playing the character in 1968, his appearances were not consecutive -- there were gaps in between episodes and seasons.

• Dann Florek, Captain Cragen (19 Years)

  Dann Florek first started playing Captain Cragen in 1990 on NBC's "Law & Order." After three seasons, Dick Wolf shook up the show and replaced Florek. He returned for an episode 1995 and again in a TV movie 1998. He joined "Law & Order: SVU" in 1999 and has been with the series since.

• Kelsey Grammer, Frasier Crane (20 Years)

  Kelsey Grammer originated the character of Frasier Crane on "Cheers" in 1984 and portrayed the character for 20 years on his spinoff, "Frasier," which ended in 2004. Grammer also played Frasier once again in 2008 for a Dr. Pepper commercial.

• James Arness, Matt Dillon (20 Years)

  James Arness starred in "Gunsmoke" from September 10, 1955, to March 31, 1975, the show's entire 20-year run. Arness also reprised the role of Matt Dillion in five TV movies from 1987 and 1994.

• Voice Cast of "The Simpsons" (25 Years)

  "The Simpsons" as a series started in 1989 on Fox, but the show originated as a short on "The Tracey Ullman" show in 1987. "The Simpsons" recently started its 24th season and has been renewed through Season 25.

• Susan Flannery, Stephanie Forrester (25 Years)

  Susan Flannery has been around soaps for years, but her longest run has been on "The Bold and the Beautiful" as matriarch Stephanie Forrester. She was one of the few remaining original actors to appear on the soap before news broke that she was leaving in 2012.

• Suzanne Rogers, Maggie Horton (39 Years)

  Suzanne Martin has been playing Maggie Horton on "Days Of Our Lives" since the show began in 1973. In 1979, Rogers won a Daytime Emmy for her work on the soap.

• Susan Lucci, Erica Kane (41 Years)

  Susan Lucci fended off stalkers, kidnappers, marriage proposals and every classic soap opera trope on "All My Children" as Erica Kane from 1970 right until the show ended in 2011. Lucci's 41-year run on the soap also netted her 18 Daytime Emmy nominations and one win.

• Erika Slezak, Viki Lord (41 Years)

  Like her "All My Children" counterpart, Erika Slezak spent 41 years on her ABC soap, "One Life to Live." While she didn't originate the role of Victoria Lord, Slezak took it over in 1971 and stuck around all the way through the very end in January 2012. She won six Daytime Emmys for her work.

• Caroll Spinney, Oscar the Grouch/Big Bird (43 Years)

  Caroll Spinney has been with "Sesame Street" from the start. He's played both Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird since 1969, a total of 43 years. He's won multiple Daytime Emmys for his work on "Sesame Street" and two Grammys for related recordings. In 2006, Spinney was awarded a lifetime achievement award from National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Pauline Litton awarded an MBE ? Family Tree

Pauline Litton MBE

Pauline Litton, one of the best known names in family history for many years was awarded an MBE in the New Year?s Honours listings for Services to Genealogy and Family History.

Pauline tells us she first became interested in the subject in 1968 while living in London. In those days it cost 1s 6d to make a ?particular search? (for an individual) in the General Register Office indexes (in Somerset House ? the only complete set available for England & Wales) for a period of five successive years, and ?1 10s for a six-hour general search in the indexes. Certificates were 3s 9d (they rose to 7s 6d by 1970). How things have changed since then, she says.

In 1973 Pauline and her husband Roger moved to Cheshire where she became involved with family history in that part of the country, becoming Editor of the North Cheshire Family History Society Magazine from 1974 to 1985 and Secretary between 1976 and 1985.

Since that time she has been:

• Council member of the Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS) (1979-1988);
• Publications committee member ? FFHS (1982-1994)
• Honorary editor of Family History News and Digest for the FFHS (1982-1988)
• Vice chairman of the FFHS (1982-1985); secretary to council 1987-1989
• Series editor of the ?Basic facts about ?? series of 27 booklets for the FFHS (1995-2007)
• Secretary ??Ripon Family History Group (1990-1994)
• Editor ? Family History Journal, Ripon Historical Society (1991-1997)
• Life vice president, the FFHS 1997
• Genealogical consultant to Family Tree Magazine (1991-2001) and to Practical Family History magazine (1997-2001).
• President ??Harrogate Family History Society (2007)
• Member of the Yorkshire Regional Museums Libraries and Archives Council (2001-2007)
• Secretary ? Yorkshire Parish Register Section (1999-)
• Council member ? Yorkshire Archaeological Society (and, for six years, was a trustee of the charity) (1999-).
